MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Lady Eagles led 2-0 in the second half at home for the second time this season, but a three goal comeback struck again as the Gyrenes stole a 3-2 result Saturday night at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
After a stalemate in the first half,
Mekenzie Bettis got on the end of a bouncing ball delivered by
Emily Hardman's free kick from midfield that deflected around a couple of defenders before Bettis scrambled home her first college goal in the 50th minute.
Just four minutes later,
Gabriela Garzon Valero was brought down in the box before she placed home a bottom corner penalty to make it 2-0 and open her college scoring account as well.
However, Ave Maria scored twice just 25 seconds apart off a corner initially and a long range shot moments after a turnover after kickoff.
In the 83rd minute,
Cassie Jackson had seemingly scored the go-ahead goal but was controversially ruled offside. Two minutes later, Ave Maria scored the match winner as a cross was squared in with five minutes to play.
The Lady Eagles move on to SSAC play as they travel to Dalton State Friday night at 6:30 central.
