Wild seventh inning lifts Brewton-Parker over Faulkner in heartbreaker

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Faulkner faced Brewton-Parker in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament here at the South Commons Softball Complex Thursday afternoon. After taking advantage of numerous Lady Baron errors to claim a two run lead, Faulkner stumbled into a pair of its own errors in the bottom of the seventh, giving life to Brewton-Parker. The Lady Barons scored three runs with two outs on the board catapulting themselves into a 3-2 victory.

Missy Duke hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the sixth inning and Erin Byrd scored on an error in the seventh to give Faulkner the 2-0 lead.

Duke promptly struck out the first two hitters in Brewton-Parker's final offensive attempt and the Lady Eagles looked to have the win in the bag.

The Lady Barons proved resilient however, and Marissa Brown kept the team alive with a double to left center.

Brewton-Parker scored and added a runner at first when Alyssa Jones fired an awkward hopper to second causing Cassie Gable to bobble the ball.

Sadie Mullins hit a single to shallow center, but Rachel Reiswig's wild throw sent Jones home and Mullins to third.

Ashley Wooton issued the final blow of the event when she laced shot to left field scoring the winning run.

The game was a pitcher showdown through six an a half innings.

Faulkner's Duke (11-8) gave up no earned runs on only four hits, while striking out seven in the loss. Three of those hits came in the bottom of the seventh.

Amber May secured the win for the Lady Barons allowing only a single hit and no earned runs, while putting away 10 at the plate.

Keri Hyde had Faulkner's lone hit.

The Lady Eagles (14-22) will face No. 14 Breanu in an elimination game Friday morning. Faulkner clipped the Golden Tigers 5-4 in their previous matchup this season. The game is set for 9 a.m. central.
