Faulkner splits season opener with Georgia Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Lady Eagles opened their season on the road with softball newcomer Georgia Gwinnett here this afternoon. Faulkner posted a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning of Game 1 to clip the home team 3-2, but four unanswered runs by the Grizzlies in the night cap ushered the 4-1 victory.
 
Faulkner bounced back from a 2-1 deficit with two unanswered runs in the sixth inning to anchor a win in the opener.
 
Junior transfer Chelsea Dunnaway (1-0) made her debut in the circle for Faulkner in Game 1 and allowed only three hits and two earned runs over five innings and put away four at the plate to get the win.
 
Fellow junior transfer Natalie Walker took over in the sixth and gave up a pair of hits and logged a strikeout to help start the season in the win column.
 
Keri Hyde was 1-for-2 and scored twice and Morgan Martin was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in Game 1.
 
Faulkner wasted little time in Game 2 and climbed into 1-0 lead in its first at bat, but four runs over the two ensuing innings put the Grizzlies in the driver's seat and the home team cruised to a comfortable win.
 
Despite producing eight hits the Lady Eagles scored only a single run, while Georgia Gwinnett made good with four scores on 10 hits.
 
Mattie Dotson (0-1) gave up seven hits and allowed three earned runs in the loss. The sophomore had three strikeouts.
 
Walker returned to the circle in the fourth inning and allowed just three hits and no runs through the remainder of the outing.
 
Martin was 2-for-3 and Tori Hollis was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the second game.
 
Faulkner moves to 1-1 on the season and will travel to West Point, Ga., to take on Point University at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
