No. 9 Faulkner stays unbeaten in SSAC with sweep of Truett-McConnell

CLEVELAND, Ga. - Johnny Shuttlesworth tossed a three-hitter in a 2-0 victory in the opener and David Bishop drove in five runs in a 11-3 win in the nightcap as No. 9 Faulkner stayed unbeaten in the Southern States Athletic Conference here Friday with a sweep of Truett-McConnell.

With the pair of wins, played in frigid conditions, Faulkner improved to 17-2 overall and 8-0 in the SSAC, while Truett-McConnell dropped to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the league.

In Game 1, Michael Cruz had three hits and drove in both Faulkner runs, one coming in the second inning on an RBI single and the other in the seventh on a solo home run. It was all Shuttlesworth would need in moving to 4-0 on the season and dropping his earned-run average to a microscopic 0.72. Ethan Williams added a pair of hits to Faulkner's nine-hit attack.

Game 2 was close until the fifth inning when Faulkner, trailing 2-1, exploded for six runs to take control. Bishop's two-run double was the big hit, and he duplicated the feat in a three-run seventh as the Eagles raced away. Joining Bishop with two hits in the second game were Brook Boudreaux, Zak Colby, Sergio Sanchez and Williams, with Boudreaux scoring three runs, and Bishop and Sanchez adding two apiece.

Will Dismukes improved to 3-0 on the year, scattering five hits and allowing all three runs in seven innings of work.

"Shuttlesworth was outstanding once again today, and it was really tough battling the cold," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "I am proud of the team effort we continue to get, and it's always nice when you show you can go on the road and win."

Faulkner and Truett-McConnell play the finale of their three-game series Saturday morning at 10.
