Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Top-ranked Faulkner scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to allow the Eagles to nip Thomas 10-9 and sweep a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon in non-conference college baseball action. The Eagles, who have won seven in a row, won the opener 3-0.
After Chris Madera opened the ninth with a double Michael Cruz doubled him in to tie it. Mike Correa then laid down a bunt, and Deric Sosa's wild throw allowed Cruz to score what would be the winning run. Labradford Griffis earned the victory, retiring the Night Hawks in order in the bottom of the ninth.
The Eagles (11-2) pounded out 13 hits in Game 2, with Madera, Cruz, Robert Llera and Luis Sanchez collecting two apiece. Taylor Sasser drove in a pair of runs with a two-run homer, with Cruz and Sanchez also knocking in two runs each.
RIght-hander Julian Esquibel was Faulkner's starter, allowing six runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings. Patrick McGrady and Kurt Lipscomb also pitched in relief for the Eagles before Griffis took over in the final inning. Faulkner trailed 6-0 after two innings, but a five-run seventh highlighted by Sasser's two-run blast handed it a 7-6 advantage. Thomas regained the lead with a two-spot in its half of the seventh, and both teams scored single runs in the eighth to set the stage for Faulkner's dramatic rally.
In Game 1, Holcombe (3-1) scattered six hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out five and walking only two. He got all the support he needed from Cruz, who had an RBI single in the first inning and a solo home run in the fifth. Robert Llera drove in the third Faulkner run with a base hit in the fourth inning. Griffis pitched a scoreless seventh to lock down his second save of the season.
The Eagles host Point in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Harrison Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
