No. 1 Faulkner survives Point upset bid, wins 5-4

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –  A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning by Luis Sanchez allowed Faulkner to break a 4-all tie and escape with a 5-4 victory over upset-minded Point here Tuesday afternoon in college baseball action at Harrison Field.

The top-ranked Eagles (12-2) scored two runs in the first inning and single runs in the second and third to build an early 4-0 lead, but the NightHawks touched up Eagle reliever Vinny Lujan for four runs in the fifth to tie the game. Sanchez's RBI flyout made a winner out of Patrick McGrady (3-0), who pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the Eagles. Labradford Griffis earned his fourth save of the season.

"We are not playing good baseball right now," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "We'll need to play a lot better than we're playing if we're going to be competitive in our league."

Faulkner managed only eight hits against Point (8-5), with Dauris Holguin and Esteban Paula each collecting two.

The Eagles host Loyola in a three-game Southern States Athletic Conference series this weekend, with Game 1 scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at Harrison Field.
