Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No. 1 Faulkner collected six straight hits in a four-run third inning en route to a 5-2 victory here Tuesday afternoon over No. 17 Southern Poly at Harrison Field.
Both the Eagles (26-5) and Hornets (20-10) are members of the Southern States Athletic Conference, but Tuesday's game was considered a non-conference game and will not count in the league standings.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, the Eagles touched Hornet starter Matt Miller with the barrage, with Kevin Torres, Luis Sanchez, Chris Madera, Michael Cruz, Robert Llera and Sergio Sanchez all collecting hits. Madera and Cruz each singled in runs, and Sergio Sanchez doubled in two more in support of Faulkner starter and winner Vinny Lujan (3-0). Miller fell to 3-1 in taking the loss for Southern Poly.
Madera added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it 5-1, with the Hornets' single run in the fifth the final tally of the game. Lujan scattered seven hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out five. Labradford Griffis earned the save, allowing just one hit over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Luis Sanchez, Madera, Cruz and Llera each had a pair of hits in Faulkner's 12-hit attack.
"We played solid baseball today, and Vinny battled his way through against a good Southern Poly team," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "We strung together big hits, and that's what you have to do when runs are going to be at a premium."
The Eagles travel to Gwinnett, Ga., Wednesday to battle Georgia Gwinnett College. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
