No. 1 Faulkner edges Georgia Gwinnett 4-2 for ninth straight victory

Box Score
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Faulkner scored all of its runs in the third inning and then relied on solid pitching en route to a 4-2 victory over Georgia Gwinnett here Wednesday afternoon at the Grizzly Baseball Complex, putting an end to the host's 20-game winning streak.

The victory was the Eagles' ninth in a row, and pushed their record to 27-5. The Grizzlies fell to 26-4, losing their first game since falling to Bryan College on Feb. 15.

The Eagles jumped on Georgia Gwinnett starter Alex Roberts in the decisive third inning. Robert Llera doubled in the first run, and a Sergio Sanchez single made it 2-0. A Grizzly error resulted in the third run, with Elvis Rodriguez pushing the margin to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.

Faulkner starter Matthew Martin ran into trouble in the fifth, issuing four walks and a hit batsman as the Grizzlies cut the Faulkner lead in half. Robbie Payne's sacrifice fly brought the Grizzlies to within 4-1, and Ty Abbott was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Faulkner bullpen then took over, with Patrick McGrady, Jeremy Holcombe and Labradford Griffis slamming the door on any thoughts of a Grizzly rally.

McGrady and Holcombe combined on 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, with Griffis earning his seventh save by tossing a scoreless ninth. The hard-throwing left-hander did allow a hit and a walk in the final inning, but got Robbie Payne to line into a game-ending double play.

"We got great work out of our bullpen, allowing only one hit in the last five innings," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "We had the big inning, but didn't take advantage of some other opportunities we had. It was a good mid-week win to help get us ready for another big conference weekend."

Faulkner travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., this weekend to face William Carey in a Southern States Athletic Conference three-game series. Friday's first game is set for a 6 p.m. start.
