No. 2 AUM sweeps error-prone Faulkner in SSAC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Auburn Montgomery's three-run seventh inning effort broke the Warhawks free from a late Game 1 tie with Faulkner and ultimately secured the 5-3 win. AUM's consistent offense coupled with a crucial pair of Lady Eagle errors then ushered in the Southern States Athletic Conference series sweep with the 4-1 victory in the nightcap here at Wynn Field.

It was Faulkner (13-18, 5-11 SSAC) that struck first in the opener when Kendra Orozco dumped an RBI singled just beyond the shortstop in the first inning.

The Warhawks (27-3, 16-0 SSAC) responded quickly, however, when Jade Sasser followed Lauren Shaw's leadoff double with an RBI single to center the following inning.

Faulkner pinched the AUM lead in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of back to back doubles from Hannah Qualls and Avery Mott.

The visitors brought an end to the stalemate in the top of the seventh, however, when they loaded the bags on a pair of singles followed by a fielder's choice that came up empty.

AUM's Katie Spain and Shaw each offered up sacrifice flies before Kayla Hale capped the Warhawk scoring effort with an RBI single up the middle.

The Lady Eagles refused to go quietly, however, and worked themselves into a bases-loaded, no-outs advantage in their final trip to the plate.

Faulkner managed to score on a miscue at home plate on an AUM force out effort, but the Warhawks made good on a subsequent out at home on that same play when a second runner attempted to score on the error.

Faulkner failed to generate any further damage and closed the event with two runners in scoring position.

AUM capitalized on a pair of crucial Lady Eagle errors with two outs on the board in the first inning of Game 2. A miscommunication on a popup followed by a wild throw to second base allowed two Warhawk runs to score.

Spain then extended the AUM lead to 3-0 with a solo bomb to center field in the third inning.

Orozco put Faulkner on the board when she crushed the opening pitch over the wall at left-center in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Warhawks then answered with another solo shot courtesy of Sasser in the following at bat.

Faulkner had seven errors on the day.

Chelsey Dunnaway (3-10) suffered the loss in the opener allowing six hits and four earned runs while tallying four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Hayden Strickland secured the final out in the opener.

Mattie Dotson (8-4) scattered eight hits over seven innings and logged three strikeouts in the Game 2 loss. Two of the runs were earned.

Orozco was 3-for-7 on the afternoon and had a pair of RBIs and scored.

Faulkner will host Mobile in SSAC action on Tuesday, April 15. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
