Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jackson Webb's three-run homer highlighted a six-run fourth as No. 5 Faulkner handed head coach Patrick McCarthy his 400th win as a head coach with a 7-4 season-opening victory over LSU-Alexandria here Friday afternoon at Harrison Field.
The Eagles (1-0) trailed twice early before the decisive fourth. Following the game, seniors Mike Correa and Robert Llera presented McCarthy with the game ball before the entire Eagle team posed for pictures with its skipper. McCarthy, who has guided Faulkner to the World Series three times including the national championship season in 2013, is now 242-76 in his sixth season at the helm. He also won 158 games in five seasons as the head coach at Freed-Hardeman.
"It's great to start the season with a win," McCarthy said. "As far as the 400th win goes, there have been a lot of people, players and coaches, who have been such a big part of my career. I've been blessed to be at two fine universities which have given the baseball programs the opportunity to succeed. I'm happy today because winning this game meant so much to the guys on this team."
In the second inning, Alexis Torres doubled and scored on a pair of errors committed on a Correa ground ball, tying the game at 1-1.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Faulkner's Nick Cain homered to again deadlock the game. After Alexis Torres was hit by a pitch and Dennis Morton singled, Webb homered over the right-field wall to give the Eagles the lead for good at 5-2. Faulkner added to the advantage in the same half inning, scoring a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a Llera RBI single.
Victor Arche scattered eight hits over five innings to earn the victory, allowing four runs, only three of which were earned. Alejandro Castro relieved Arche in the sixth, and tossed four innings of one-hit relief to grab the save. LSU-Alexandria's Ryan Touchet took the loss, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Llera was the only Eagle with multiple hits, collecting a pair of singles. The Generals' Mike Fredeboelling had three hits, including a double.
Faulkner plays LSU-Alexandria again at noon Saturday, then faces Northwood later that afternoon at 5. Both games are at Harrison Field.
