Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner used a five-run sixth inning to bounce LSU-Alexandria 9-4 here Saturday afternoon at Harrison Field, then relied on a solid pitching performance from Phillip Anderson to knock off Northwood 4-2 as the Eagles stayed unbeaten on the young season.
The fifth-ranked Eagles improved to 3-0 with the pair of victories. LSU-Alexandria, which beat Northwood 7-5 on Saturday, is 1-2, while Northwood is 0-2.
"We responded when we needed to against LSU-Alexandria, and also got some big hits against Northwood," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "I thought the pitching was good today for it being so early in the season. We have a lot of work to do, but I'm proud of the guys for finding ways to win games. That'll pay dividends down the road."
In the Eagles' victory over LSU-Alexandria, Edgar Figueroa and Robert Llera both drove in a pair of runs in the decisive five-run sixth inning. The game was tied at 4 entering the bottom of the frame, with Chris Madera's RBI single putting Faulkner on top for good. Figueroa and Llera followed with their big hits to make a winner out of Eagle starter Kurt Lipscomb, who allowed four runs and five hits in six innings of work.
Nick Cain had a two-run homer in the game for Faulkner, his second of the season. Figueroa added a solo shot, collecting three hits and three RBIs for the Eagles. Llera also had two hits.
In the nightcap against Northwood, Anderson scattered five hits in six scoreless innings of work to earn the victory. He struck out five Seahawk batters. Patrick McGrady pitched the final three innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits to earn his first save.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first when Madera, who had doubled, stole third and scored on a wild throw. In the bottom of the sixth Llera scored on a Dennis Morton RBI single to push the lead to 2-0. After Northwood scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth, Cody Sos got the run right back by homering on the first pitch of the bottom half of the inning. Kevin Torres knocked in Faulkner's final run of the game later in the inning with a pinch-hit double. The Seahawks added another unearned run in the top of the ninth before McGrady coaxed a foul pop out to end it.
Madera had four hits in the game, including a double, while Llera added a pair of singles. In addition to his home run, Sos added a single. Northwood's Cody Gray took the loss.
Faulkner hosts Northwood Sunday at 1 p.m. at Harrison Field.
