Box Score SELMA, Ala. – On a night where missed shots were the norm, Concordia's Carsunda Sutton and Tavia Harris were the exceptions. The pair combined for 38 points, making 14 of their 23 attempts from the field, as the Lady Hornets handed Faulkner its first defeat with a 63-56 victory here Tuesday night.
Sutton had 22 points and Harris added 16 for Concordia, which avenged a 65-60 loss to the Lady Eagles on Oct. 31 in Montgomery at the Jimmy Faulkner Classic. Sutton grabbed 12 rebounds and Harris 13 as the Lady Hornets dominated the glass by a count of 57-37.
Faulkner (3-1) started strong, leading by two points after one quarter and building as much as a seven-point advantage in the second period behind 3-point field goals from Erichea Barnes, Kylie Moore and China Leary. Concordia slowly chipped away, and trailed only 29-27 at the break.
The lead went back and forth for much of the third quarter, with Savana Flack's basket at athe 2:48 mark putting the Lady Eagles ahead 42-41. It would be Faulkner's last lead of the game, as Sutton and Harris combined for the Lady Hornets' last eight points of the quarter, resulting in a 49-45 Concordia advantage heading to the fourth.
The Lady Hornets led by as many as eight in the final 10 minutes, with the Lady Eagles climbing to within three points on two occasions, the final time coming in the last minute. Ashley Henley made four straight free throws, however, to close it out for Concordia.
Faith LeGate had 11 points and seven rebounds to pace Faulkner, while Leary added 10 points and seven rebounds. Shelby Williams was the only Lady Eagle to make at least 50 percent of their shots, hitting all three of her attempts en route to a nine-point effort. Olivia Adamson contributed eight points and seven rebounds.
For the game Faulkner shot just 25 percent from the field, while Concordia connected on only 33 percent of its attempts. Minus Sutton and Harris, the Lady Hornets were just 8-of-44 for an 18-percent shooting clip.
"We were not as aggressive on the rebounding end as we should have been," Faulkner head coach Reed Sutton said. "I thought we were gritty on defense, but in the second half we just couldn't find the basket. We were just out-sized underneath, and they took advantage. Still we had a lot of positives to take out of this loss."
Faulkner made 16-of-19 free throws, and committed just 17 turnovers while forcing 23 Concordia miscues.
The Lady Eagles begin Southern States Athletic Conference action Saturday in New Orleans against Loyola. The game tips off at 2 p.m.
