Box Score 2 MOBILE, Ala. – After seeing its nine-game winning streak come crashing down in a 10-0 defeat, fifth-ranked Faulkner bounced back to beat Mobile 6-4 in the nightcap here Saturday to take two of the three games played in the teams' opening Southern States Athletic Conference series at Jacobs Field.
The Eagles (10-1 overall, 2-1 SSAC) got off the deck in Game 2 due in part to solid pitching from Kurt Lipscomb (2-0) and some timely hitting. The game was tied at 2 entering the third inning when Faulkner put together four hits, including run-scoring doubles from Robert Llera, Nick Cain and Dennis Morton. The three-run inning gave the Eagles the lead for good. Lipscomb went five innings, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits. Christian Torres and Vinny Lujan did the job in relief, allowing just one earned run in three combined innings. Jack Charleston earned his second save in two days, tossing a perfect ninth for Faulkner.
Alexis Torres had three hits and scored three times for the Eagles, while both Llera and Cain added two hits apiece. Llera also knocked in a pair of Faulkner runs. Galen Doucet had two hits and two RBIs for the Rams (9-4 overall, 1-2 SSAC), with Roman Testani and Tyler Hardy both adding two hits to the Mobile effort. Jacob Hyde (1-1) was the losing pitcher for the Rams.
"Winning a series on the road in our league is probably the hardest thing to do in the country," head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "Mobile had a great approach in facing our pitching all weekend. To be honest, this was one of the toughest series that we've had in a long time. It took our whole team to scratch out two of three."
In the opener the Rams pounded out 14 hits off of four Faulkner pitchers, with starter Victor Arche (2-1) taking the loss for the Eagles. He went four innings, allowing six of the hits, and three runs. Of relievers Tyler Campbell, Brian Bass and Jackson Webb, it was Bass who was roughed up the most, surrendering five hits and five runs in just a third of an inning.
Mobile scored the only run they would need in the bottom of the first inning, then added two more in the third before a seven-run uprising in the seventh. The Rams sent 12 men to the plate, collected seven hits and were the recipients of two Faulkner errors in the game-deciding frame. Corey Hale earned the win for Mobile, tossing six innings and allowing just four Eagle hits. Trey Cockrell finished Faulkner in the seventh in a game called due to the run rule.
Dakota Spikes had three hits and two RBIs in the Mobile victory, while Hardy, Chandler Durham, Braxton Hamil and Payne Palmer all contributed two hits for the Rams. Chris Madera, Cody Sos, Llera and Torres combined for the four Faulkner hits.
Faulkner hosts Reinhardt Tuesday afternoon at Harrison Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
