Anderson, Lipscomb dominate Lindenwood in doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner starting pitchers Phillip Anderson and Kurt Lipscomb turned in dominant performances in a doubleheader sweep of Lindenwood-Belleville here Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Harrison Field.

The fifth-ranked Eagles (16-1) won the first game 5-2 and the second 6-0 to run their winning streak to seven. The Lynx fell to 1-7 with the pair of losses.

"It's a long weekend for us, and it's good to get off on the right foot," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "We got great pitching again from both Anderson and Lipscomb. Both guys are throwing the ball really well right now. We hit it fairly well today, but we need to stay aggressive with our approach."

Faulkner managed just five hits in the opening-game win, but Anderson was once again dominant in moving to 4-0 on the season. The junior right-hander allowed just four hits - three of which went to Christian Cavaness - and struck out 12 in his complete-game performance. Dylan Arvai went the distance and took the loss for the Lynx, dropping to 0-2.

Chris Madera singled and scored on an error in the bottom of the first for a quick 1-0 lead, then Faulkner took advantage of another Lindenwood miscue to score three unearned runs in the second. Mario Amaral got the only hit of the inning, which included a run-producing balk by Arvai. Madera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in another run, and Alexis Torres added a sacrifice fly as the Eagles jumped on top 4-0.

The advantage moved to 5-0 in the third, with Dennis Morton tripling with one out and later scoring on Nick Cain's RBI single. Cavaness hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth to get Lindenwood on the board, but Anderson held the Lynx there until the ninth. Caveness led off with a single and scored later in the inning on a Matt Lawver base hit. Anderson retired the next two batters to end it. Arvai dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Lipscomb (4-0) was equally impressive in Game 2, a seven-inning affair, and the Faulkner bats came alive in support with nine hits. Morton doubled to lead off the bottom of the second and scored on a Lynx' throwing error to hand the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Madera blasted a solo homer in the third to make it 2-0, and Faulkner broke it open with a three-run fourth. There were four hits in the decisive frame, with Madera's RBI single and Torres' two-run double the big blows.

In the sixth, Junior Santos' sacrifice fly accounted for the day's final run. Lipscomb struck out nine and walked only one, allowing four hits in the seven innings of work. Lindenwood's Zach Speckhals (0-2) took the loss for the Lynx.

Faulkner faces Judson (Ill) Saturday afternoon at 3, then battles Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 5:30.
