Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Jackson Webb's RBI single in extra innings lifted Faulkner to a 3-2 victory over Georgetown and a sweep of their doubleheader here Friday afternoon at Harrison Field.
The Eagles (5-0) trailed 2-0 in the scheduled seven-inning game, but rallied to tie it before winning in the bottom of the ninth. Webb, who had two of Faulkner's four hits in the game, drove in Alexis Torres with the game-winner. Torres coaxed a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a Georgetown error prior to Webb's base hit.
Faulkner won the opener in more comfortable fashion, riding the six innings of scoreless pitching from starter Phillip Anderson to a 6-1 victory.
The fifth-ranked Eagles moved to 5-0 with the victory, while Friday's two games were No. 8 Georgetown's first outings of the season. It was the first meeting between the two teams since the first round of last year's Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. Faulkner won that game 5-4, also scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
"It's always a battle with Georgetown," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "They have a very talented team and are well-coached. We probably had an advantage today since we had already played three games last weekend. We were able to get some of the early-season jitters out of the way. I'm proud of our team for having what it takes to battle from behind and win against a quality team. Hopefully, that will help us down the road somewhere."
In Game 1, the Eagles jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Robert Llera doubled into the gap in right-center field and scored on Nick Cain's RBI single up the middle. Faulkner added to the lead in the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of walks by Tiger starter Payton Lobdell. With runners at first and third and two outs, Chris Madera singled to left to push the Eagles' lead to 2-0.
Faulkner took complete control with a four-run seventh, batting around while collecting six hits in the decisive frame. Facing Georgetown relief pitcher Sean Hale, Alexis Torres doubled to open the inning and, after being sacrificed to third, scored on Randy Joung's pinch-hit RBI single to make it 3-0. Mike Correa doubled to chase Hale, and Madera followed with his second run-scoring single of the game. Later in the inning, Edgar Figueroa knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Llera drove in another with a two-out single, providing the Eagles with a 6-0 advantage.
Anderson allowed only three hits while striking out 11 in improving his record to 2-0. The right hander from Thompson, Ga., walked a batter and hit four before giving way to reliever Patrick McGrady, who pitched a perfect seventh. Tyler Campbell allowed a Georgetown run in the eighth, with Steven Mancilla drawing a walk, moving to third on Damian Rutherford's double and scoring on an infield groundout by Ryan Serrato. Campbell finished it off with a scoreless ninth. Lobdell took the loss for the Tigers, allowing two runs and three hits, striking out six and walking only two.
Llera, Madera and Cain each had two hits for the Eagles. Rutherford had two hits, including a double, for the Tigers.
In the nightcap, Georgetown staked starter Brian Barry to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. David Higuera opened the inning with a single past second, then Mancilla drew a walk. With one out Jovan Hernandez blooped a single to right that scored the first run and Serrato followed with a sacrifice fly, resulting in the two-run Tiger lead.
Barry cruised through the first four innings before the left-hander ran into trouble in the fifth. Dario Polanco drew a walk and advanced to third on Barry's two-base throwing error on a pickoff move. After pinch hitter Kevin Torres walked, Georgetown coach Micah Baumfield pulled Barry for Serrato. The Eagles' Polanco scored Faulkner's first run on a Correa bunt attempt. A wild pitch moved Torres to third, and Madera's sacrifice fly to deep left tied the game at 2.
Georgetown chased Faulkner starter Kurt Lipscomb in the sixth, but with two on and one out and facing Eagle reliever Alejandro Castro, Serrato flew out to center and Rick Reyes grounded out to third to end the threat.
Trey Gross opened the top of the seventh for Georgetown by getting hit with a pitch, and advanced to second on a Castro balk. Tanner Uncle's slow ground out to second moved Gross to third. With one out Gross tried to score on a lazy fly ball to Faulkner right fielder Cain, who gunned him out at the plate for a double play that ended the inning. Faulkner left a pair of base runners in its half of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
Neither team scored in the eighth, setting the stage for Webb's heroics in the bottom of the ninth. Hernandez had two singles in the game for Georgetown. Castro earned the victory for the Eagles, pitching four innings of scoreless relief. Serrato took the loss for the Tigers.
The Eagles and the Tigers play a nine-inning game Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Harrison Field.
