No. 2 Faulkner outslugs Point in 12-6 non-conference victory

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of four Point errors en route to a 12-6 victory here Wednesday in a non-conference slugfest at Harrison Field. Two-time Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Week Dennis Morton was back at it again, collecting three doubles and two RBIs in the Eagles' 24th victory of the season.

Faulkner (24-3) also got a home run and double from Robert Llera in winning its sixth straight game. The Eagles, who also have winning streaks of nine and 10 this season, moved up to No. 2 in the first NAIA Top 25 regular season poll released earlier this week.

"We hit the ball well in spots today, but we need to be more consistent, both at the plate and with our pitching," said Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy, who saw the Skyhawks collect 13 hits off of five Eagle pitchers. "It's good to get another win, though, as we head out of town for a conference series this weekend."

The Eagles once again gave their starting pitcher an early lead, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Llera and Morton both doubled in runs, and Morton later scored on a wild pitch to put Faulkner on top 3-0.

Point (9-14) erupted in the third, knocking around Faulkner starter Vinny Lujan for five runs on six hits. Christian Cabral singled in two runs, and Matt Hayes' two-run double gave the Skyhawks the lead. The fifth run scored on an infield groundout. The five-run inning was the second biggest allowed by the Faulkner staff this season, surrendering seven against Mobile in its only Southern States Athletic Conference loss.

Faulkner tied it in its half of third, with Llera's solo homer sparking the rally. Point right fielder Anthony Padron then lost Morton's double in the gray sky, and Morton later scored on Alexis Torres' single up the middle.

The Skyhawks regained the lead in the fourth when Nathan Greene singled, stole second and then scored on Trey Chambers single, but it would be the visitors' final tally of the game. The Eagles answered in the bottom half on Cody Sos' home run to deadlock the slugfest at 6. Faulkner then took the lead for good when, in the sixth, Morton connected for his third double of the game, and scored on another Torres' RBI single. Nick Cain singled in Torres to push the Eagle advantage to 8-6.

The Eagles added some insurance in the sixth. Nick Cain singled in two runs in the four-run outburst, with Morton adding his second RBI on a sacrifice fly. The fourth Faulkner run came across on a pass ball.

Christian Torres (2-1), who relieved Lujan in the fourth inning, earned the victory for the Eagles, while Harrison Pollard took the loss for Point. Torres and Cain also had a pair of hits in the game for Faulkner.

Faulkner travels to New Orleans this weekend to face Southern States Athletic Conference foe Loyola in a three-game series. Game 1 begins Friday night at 6, with Saturday's doubleheader set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
