Faulkner sweeps Bethel in SSAC showdown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner's Holli Brooks punctuated the eight-inning Game 1 affair against Bethel University (Tenn.) in this afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference showdown with a walk-off grand slam elevating the home team to an 8-4 victory here at Wynn Field. The Lady Eagles then completed the sweep with a 3-2 decision in the second event.

The Wildcats (5-15) bolted out of the gate with three runs on five hits in their first trip to the plate in the opener. Faulkner, meanwhile, was more methodical in its scoring endeavors, reserving its offensive explosion until the eighth inning.

The Lady Eagles scored in the first on a Jessica Butterworth single and added another run in the second on a single from Hannah Qualls.

Abbie Pierce cracked a beautiful shot down the third base line in the bottom of the fifth, tying the event, before she scored the go-ahead run just seconds later on a Butterworth single up the middle.

Bethel made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning when Shelby Evans knocked in the game-tying run with a single down the third base line. The stalemate held for just one inning, however.

Faulkner entered the eighth armed with the meat of its lineup which quickly paid off. Butterworth rocked a double off the left field fence before Kendra Orozco made it safely to first on an infield error. The Wildcats then chose to intentionally walk Sophie Slemp leaving a bases-loaded, no-out situation on Brooks' doorstep. The senior took full advantage of the offer by emptying the bags on the fourth pitch.

The visitors posted a single run in the top of the first inning of Game 2, but Faulkner answered immediately with a run from Pierce that same inning.

The pendulum swung back in Bethel's favor the following inning on a Shawna McAdams home run to right field.

Orozco drove in the tying run with a single to shallow center in the third however, before Kelsey Hartley moved the lead permanently into Faulkner's favor with a solo bomb to right field in the fourth.

Butterworth was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run in Game 1 and Brooks was 2-for-4.

Mattie Dotson (7-3) scattered 10 hits over eight innings and gave up three earned runs in the win. The senior also tallied five strikeouts.

Emma Cornell (3-1) gave up seven hits over as many innings and allowed two earned runs while putting three away at the plate in the Game 2 victory.

Hannahlee Harris, Hartley and Orozco were each 2-for-3 in that event.

Faulkner improved to 14-8 overall and 4-2 in the league. The Lady Eagles host conference foe Blue Mountain tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m.
