Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Starting pitchers Victor Arche and Kurt Lipscomb dominated Brewton-Parker here Saturday afternoon, as Faulkner took two from the Barons 5-1 and 9-0 en route to a sweep of the Southern States Athletic Conference three-game series at Harrison Field.
With the sweep, the fifth-ranked Eagles moved to 8-1 in the SSAC and 22-3 overall, while No. 21 Brewton-Parker dropped to 8-11 overall and 4-7 in the league. The first regular season NAIA Top 25 poll is released Tuesday.
"We know our league and how tough it is, and that's why winning our weekend series is our goal," said Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy, whose Eagles have won three straight SSAC regular season championships. "We continue to get good pitching, and got off to fast starts in both games today. There's still a lot of baseball to be played, and a lot of room for improvement for our team."
Arche (4-1) controlled Game 1, a seven-inning battle, allowing just four hits while striking out six and walking only one. The junior left hander got all the support he needed in the first when the Eagles jumped on Brewton-Parker starter Travis Higgs for four runs. He walked two in the inning and hit another batter, with Dennis Morton providing a two-run double as Faulkner grabbed a 4-0 lead.
The advantage grew to 5-0 an inning later when Dario Polanco singled, stole second and scored on Chris Madera's single. Arche cruised into the sixth with a shutout, having given up just two hits. The Barons sandwiched a hit batter with a pair of base hits, and Brandon Bynam followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to account for their only run.
Robert Llera had two of the Eagles' eight hits in the game, while Morton added a run scored to his two RBI output. Madera had a hit, scored a run and and drove in a run for Faulkner.
Faulkner hosts Campbellsville (Ky.) in a non-conference battle Sunday afternoon at Harrison Field. The Tigers of the Mid-South Conference bring a 6-1 record into the matchup.
Lipscomb (5-0) was incredibly sharp in the nightcap, tossing a three-hitter at the Barons for his second shutout of the season. The hard-throwing right hander struck out five, walked two and, just like Arche in the opener, got plenty of offensive help early. The Eagles jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first, with Morton's RBI single scoring one of the runs. Another scored on a wild pitch and the third on a Brewton-Parker error, its third of the inning. For the game, the Barons committed five miscues.
Faulkner made it 4-0 in the second inning when Madera doubled and later scored on Llera's sacrifice fly. Three more runs in the fourth pushed the margin to 7-0, with Llera's RBI single highlighting the uprising. Mario Amaral's long fly ball to left-center field was misplayed, allowing two more runs to cross. The Eagles closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth.
