Weary Faulkner blasts Campbellsville 10-4 to conclude busy week

Box Score
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Playing in its sixth game in six days, fifth-ranked Faulkner erased an early one-run deficit and raced away from Campbellsville (Ky.) for a 10-4 non-conference victory here Sunday afternoon at Harrison Field.

For the Eagles (23-3), who have already enjoyed nine- and eight-game winning streaks this season, it was their fifth win in a row. The victory completed a perfect weekend for Faulkner, which swept Southern States Athletic Conference foe Brewton-Parker in a three-game series Friday and Saturday.

"There's no doubt we were a bit weary today," Faulkner head coach Patrick McCarthy said. "Playing this many games allows us to look at a lot of arms and see what we'll have as we get deeper and deeper into our conference schedule. Campbellsville is a quality club, and playing teams like that will do nothing but help us down the road."

A Robert Llera run-scoring double and a Dennis Morton RBI groundout staked Faulkner to a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Tigers struck back with two runs in the second and another in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but the Eagles took control with a four-run third. Morton had an RBI single, Randy Joung an RBI double and Nick Cain a two-run double in the decisive inning, and Faulkner was never threatened again.

Edgar Figueroa doubled in a run in the fifth to make it 7-3, and Morton drove in two more with a single in the sixth to push the advantage to 9-3. The Tigers scored a single run in the seventh off of Faulkner reliever Patrick McGrady, but that would end Campbellsville's offensive output for the afternoon.

Faulkner closed out the scoring in the eighth when a Dario Polanco single was followed by a Chris Madera double to put runners at second and third. Alexis Torres then singled in the final run of the day.

The Eagles had six players with two hits apiece - Llera, Morton, Figueroa, Joung, Cain and Polanco. Joung and Polanco each scored two runs, while Cain complimented Morton's four RBI effort with two of his own.

Jack Charleston (3-0) earned the victory, scattering eight hits over six innings of work. Of the three runs he allowed only one was earned. He struck out five Tigers and did not issue a walk. McGrady, Christian Torres and Alejandro Castro each pitched an inning of relief to close out the victory.

Matt Robertson (0-1) took the loss for Campbellsville (6-2), giving up six runs over three innings. The Tigers' Chris Allen, Jeremy Rosenthal, Carlos Torres and Miguel Solano-Espinoza leach had two hits to lead the Campbellsville attack.

Faulkner hosts Point Tuesday afternoon at 5 at Harrison Field.
