Faulkner sweeps Talladega in final home series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner outhit Talladega 24 to 12 on the afternoon and cruised to a pair of victories 4-0 and 7-3 here at Wynn Field to close out the home season.

After a mostly quiet event, Faulkner struck oil in the fifth inning of Game 1 in a bases-loaded, two-out situation to score all of its runs. The Lady Eagles lit the scoreboard first on a pitching time violation before Holli Brooks delivered three runs with a hard double to left field on her first swing.

The error-prone Tornados helped Faulkner in the scoring column for much of the second event and the Lady Eagles capitalized first with a run on a bobbled ball in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Talladega wasn't the only team posting errors, however. The home team had a pair of wild throws to home plate the following inning that allowed three runs to score.

Faulkner snapped back in the third, though, behind a two-RBI triple from Kendra Orozco. Orozco then scored on an Avery Mott single to right-center field giving the team a 4-3 lead. The Lady Eagles never relinquished control.

Faulkner added three more runs in the fourth inning. The first was the result of an Emily Byrd single to center field, while the final two scores of the game were logged on Tornado errors.

Faulkner pitchers Mattie Dotson and Emma Cornell were stellar in the series.

Dotson (12-8) allowed just six hits while tallying nine strikeouts in the Game 1 shutout.

Cornell (4-3) also gave up just six hits and no earned while logged a pair of strikeouts in the Game 2 decision.

Mott went 4-for-7 with an RBI and a run in the series.

Abbie Pierce was 2-for-3 with a run in the opener and Jessica Butterworth was 2-for-4 and scored. Each also had a hit and scored twice in Game 2.

Orozco went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and runs in the second contest and Taylor Griffith was 2-for-4.

Faulkner improved to 25-17 overall and will next travel to Brunswick, Ga., to take on Coastal Georgia in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup set to begin at noon on Thursday. The teams split a series here on Monday.
