Faulkner takes down Brewton-Parker in SSAC series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner was looking to rebound from a pair of Southern States Athletic Conference sweeps on the road last week with a sweep of its own against league foe Brewton-Parker here at Wynn Field this afternoon. The Lady Eagles scored two runs in all odd innings to claim the 6-1 victory in the opener before rallying with a pair of homers in the fourth inning of Game 2 to clinch the 3-2 win and earn the sweep.

Sophie Slemp was an impressive 2-for-3 in the first contest and drove in four of Faulkner's six runs. The junior knocked in two runs on a double in the first inning and then repeated the feat in the bottom of the third.

Faulkner's two runs in the fifth inning were the result of a walk and a misplayed fielder's grounder. The Barons scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.

Brewton-Parker logged two hits and scored twice on a pair of walks to take the lead in the first inning of Game 2.

Faulkner answered in dramatic style in the bottom of the fourth, however, with a pair of home runs. Abbie Pierce put the Lady Eagles on the board with a solo bomb from the leadoff position and Emily Byrd catapulted the home team into the lead and ultimately the win with a two-run blast into the left field bullpen just moments later.

Kelsey Hartley went 3-for-4 in the first game and scored twice while Byrd was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a run in the second event.

Pierce was 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI and scored twice.

Mattie Dotson (9-5) recorded the Game 1 win scattering seven hits over as many innings while tallying six strikeouts and giving up just a single earned run.

Hayden Strickland (6-4) battled out of a shaky start to earn the second win of the day. The sophomore allowed just five hits and two earned runs in the complete game performance.

Faulkner improved to 18-12 overall and 8-6 in the league. The Lady Eagles resume SSAC action on Wednesday when they travel to Brenau University. The doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
