Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - Faulkner trailed for much of the first two and half quarters before Faith LeGate and China Leary sparked a comeback, resulting in a 77-70 Lady Eagles' victory here Saturday afternoon over Brewton-Parker in a Southern States Athletic Conference battle at the Student Activities Center.
The Lady Eagles (9-11 overall, 5-5 SSAC), who have won five of their past six conference games, trailed by 10 in the third quarter and were down 52-47 after Brewton-Parker's Brianna Boggan hit her second straight 3-pointer at the 4:50 mark of the period. LeGate and Leary then took charge for Faulkner, which ended the quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 55-52 lead to the fourth. The decisive stretch continued in the early going of the final 10 minutes, as both LeGate and Leary nailed long-range jumpers from behind the arc to put the Lady Eagles on top 61-52. Armstrong's conventional three-point play pushed the margin to 10 at 64-54 with 6:20 left in the game.
The closest the Lady Barons could get from there was seven points, as the Faulkner defense held Brewton-Parker without a basket for almost 10 minutes of playing time. The Lady Eagles' largest lead was 12, coming in the closing minute.
"The second half was truly Faulkner basketball," head coach Reed Sutton said. "It wasn't as much about designing sets. It was more about who was going to go out there and make plays, and both Faith and China really did that. Others certainly did too, and I think whenever you can earn a win on the road in this league it's a good thing."
LeGate finished with 22 points and Leary tied her career best with 19. Emma Herren chipped in a career-high 12 points. Erichea Barnes was also in double figures with 10. Lea Saunders' 17 points led the Lady Barons (4-15 overall, 0-10 SSAC), with Kenya Durden and Brianna Boggan adding 15 apiece.
"I think China continues to show why she's one of the best point guards in our league," Sutton said. "She can create and score, and hit the 3-pointer as well."
It was a lethargic start for the Lady Eagles, as Brewton-Parker quickly took the lead and didn't relinquish it in the opening two quarters. The advantage was three after the first quarter, and the Lady Barons raced away with a 10-0 run to start the second to build a 26-13 lead with 6:24 to play before halftime. Leary and Barnes both hit 3-pointers in a stretch that saw Faulkner climb back to within six points late in the period. Breton-Parker, which forced 10 Lady Eagle turnovers while committing only four in the first 20 minutes, was on top 37-30 at the break.
Faulkner hosts cross-town rival Auburn Montgomery next Saturday afternoon. The game tips off at 2 at Tine Davis Gymnasium.
