No. 7 Blue Raiders knock off No. 3 Eagles with last-inning rally

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - For the second straight day, seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson shocked No. 3 Faulkner with final-inning dramatics. On Saturday it was Austin Atwell's pinch-hit homer that shot down the Eagles. Sunday afternoon, the Blue Raiders took advantage of a Faulkner miscue to grab a 5-4 victory here in a seven-inning game at the Auburn Montgomery Baseball Complex.

The Eagles (9-4), who dropped their third straight game, took a 4-3 lead to the bottom of the last. With one out, Lindsey Wilson's Edgar Lebron singled. Brandon Munoz then doubled, chasing Faulkner reliever Austin Moreland. Miguel Castellanos entered for the Eagles, and he coaxed a ground ball to first baseman David Palenzuela. After stepping on the bag for the second out, Palenzuela's throw toward the plate to prevent the tying run sailed into the Faulkner dugout. Lebron and Munoz both scored to end it.

Moreland, in relief of Faulkner starter Ivan Pelaez, took the loss. Lindsey Wilson reliever Daniel Ferrell earned the victory that pushed the Blue Raiders to 7-3 on the season.

Faulkner scored in each of the first two innings to jump on top, with Darrius Jennings scoring on David Palenzuela's infield hit in the first and back-to-back doubles by Nick Cain and Mario Amaral producing another run in the second. The Blue Raiders were held in check by Pelaez through three innings, but got to him in the fourth. Austin Atwell singled with two outs and Miguel Reyes followed with a two-run homer to tie the game at 2.

The Eagles bounced right back, however, in the top of the fifth. Onix Martinez walked to lead off the inning and Jennings then doubled to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly from Alexis Cruz gave Faulkner the lead at 3-2, and Valenzuela's double one out later pushed the advantage back to two runs.

Lindsey Wilson trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs Victor Nazario's reached on an errant throw from third by Jennings, allowing Lebron to score. The Blue Raiders' Munoz also tried to score on the play, but Palenzuela cut him down at the plate to preserve the lead until the fateful seventh.

Palenzuela had three hits and two RBIs for the Eagles, who also got a pair of hits from Jennings and Amaral. Jennings scored two of Faulkner's four runs.

The Eagles host Talladega Tuesday afternoon at 3 at Harrison Field.
