No. 3 Faulkner tops pair of nationally-ranked teams on opening day

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner opened the season with a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. The Eagles (2-0) defeated No. 21 Missouri Baptist 5-4 at noon and followed up with a 14-3 thumping of No. 15 Keiser.

After a back-and-forth start, the Eagles were able to take control over the Missouri Baptist Spartans (0-2). On a 3-2 pitch with 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th inning, David Palenzuela sent the ball over the right field fence to tie the game 4-4, shifting the momentum to the Faulkner dugout.

Mario Amaral continued the rally by reaching first on a hit to left field. Amaral advanced to second on a passed ball, and was brought home by a Nick Cain double off the left field wall for the decisive run.

Victor Arche (1-0) earned the win, with 5.1 innings pitched, including 2 strikeouts. Austin Moreland earned the save with 1.2 hitless innings in relief of Arche.

T.J. Condon, Amaral, and Palmeiro each had two hits on the way to ten team hits.

In between the two Faulkner games, Missouri Baptist was defeated by Keiser 5-2.

In the evening game against Keiser Seahawks (1-1) the Eagles' bats erupted. Condon and Palenzuela both contributed three hits to the 14 hit total.

Deivy Palmeiro hit a two-run home run over the right field fence and Cain added a grand slam over the left field wall.

The Faulkner bats were complemented by stellar pitching. Mark Vasquez (1-0) tallied his first win of the season, striking out 10 batters in 5 innings while holding the Seahawks scoreless with 1 hit.

Brandon Suttles entered in relief of Vasquez and recorded one strikeout in his inning of work.

Matt Martin closed out the game, also adding a strikeout.

Faulkner plays the same two teams Saturday, with its matchup with Missouri Baptist starting at noon and its game against Keiser beginning at 5:30 p.m.
