MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Third-ranked Faulkner stumbled in dropping its first game of the season to No. 21 Missouri Baptist 2-1 here Saturday afternoon, but recovered with an 8-5 win over 15th-ranked Keiser at Harrison Field.
A strong pitching and defensive performance unraveled in the sixth inning of the opener as the Eagles fell to the Spartans, who scored twice in the inning to erase a 1-0 Faulkner lead. The decisive inning began when the Spartans' John Hagan was hit by a pitch by Faulkner reliever Phillip Anderson. Brian Poupore followed with a single, advancing Hagan to third. Austin Rieman then singled to right, driving Hagan home with the tying run.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Hector Candelaria popped out to Eagle second baseman Dario Polanco in foul territory down the right-field line. Poupore tagged up from third, and barely beat Polanco's throw to the plate on a bang-bang play to give Missouri Baptist the lead.
The Eagles got two runners on in the seventh, but could not score.
Faulkner starter Ivan Pelaez pitched 4.1 innings, limiting the Spartans to three hits while striking out three. Austin Moreland took the loss for the Eagles in relief.
Deivy Palmeiro drove home the lone Faulkner run, scored by Onix Martinez, with a double to right-center field in the third inning.
Faulkner (3-1) was able to regain their winning ways against Keiser. Coming off a walkoff win over the Spartans, the Seahawks had some momentum coming into the nightcap. All momentum was shut down in the first inning. Faulkner designated hitter Mario Amaral blasted a three-run homer - his first of two in the game - to stake the Eagles to a lead it would never relinquish.
Benefiting from 12 walks, Faulkner's eight runs came on just six hits en route to its third win in the four-game weekend series. Amaral's second home run was a two-run blast in the fifth, giving the senior five RBIs in the game.
Christian Torres earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings of work. He struck out five Seahawks. Miguel Castellanos picked up his first save of the season, striking out one and ending the game by coaxing a game-ending double play grounder to Polanco.
Faulkner hosts Lindenwood Friday at noon, followed by a matchup with Davenport at 5:30 p.m.
