Faulkner sweeps Brenau in SSAC showdown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner toppled conference rival Breanu 6-3 in Game 1 of this afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader before icing the visitors 4-0 in the nightcap to gain the series sweep here at Wynn Field.

Jessica Butterworth offered up Faulkner's first home run in ball park this season to ignite the scoreboard in the Lady Eagles' first trip to the plate. The two-run shot gave the home team a quick lead before Hannah Qualls added to the run total with a hard single to right center before the inning expired.

The Golden Tigers (12-11) did finally make good with a run on a hard double in the third, but Faulkner answered with a pair of RBI singles courtesy of Qualls and Emily Byrd that same inning.

Brenau picked up two more runs on a single and a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, but was unable to push the score any further.

Amanda Seales capped Faulkner's scoring efforts with her first home run of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth.

Though the second event proved a pitcher's dual over three hitless innings out of the gate, it was Faulkner slinger Caitlin Perry who remained dominant throughout the contest. The freshman kept the hard-hitting Golden Tigers off the bases and never surrendered more than a single hit in any inning while allowing just three in the outing altogether.

Qualls, meanwhile, put an end to Faulkner's offensive silence in the bottom of the fourth when she dropped an RBI single into shallow left field.

Seales then inserted a punctuation mark in the Lady Eagle's scoring summery when she crushed a three-run bomb to hard left field in the fifth.

Emma Cornell (4-0) gave up seven hits and three earned runs while striking out a pair of batters in 4 1/3 innings of work in the opening win.

Hayden Strickland took over in the circle for the remainder of the outing and allowed three hits.

Perry (4-3) evened out her personal recored with a brilliant three-hit, seven-strikeout shutout.

Top offensive performers included Qualls who was 3-for-6 on the afternoon with three RBIs.

Butterworth and Byrd each had two hits on the day. Butterworth logged a pair of RBIs and runs while Byrd booked one of each as well.

Seals secured four RBIs and scored twice on her two homers.

Faulkner improved to 10-6 overall and 3-1 in the league. The Lady Eagles next host Bryan College on Thursday. The doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. at Wynn Field.
