No. 1 Faulkner sweeps Loyola, pushes win streak to 17

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner got strong starting pitching from Christian Torres and Ivan Peleaz and the bats provided plenty of support in the top-ranked Eagles' 12-2 and 12-0 sweep of Loyola here Sunday afternoon at Harrison Field.

The pair of victories pushed Faulkner's winning streak to 17, and the weekend success moved the Eagles to 9-0 in Southern States Athletic Conference action. Patrick McCarthy's team is 26-4 overall. Loyola dropped to 18-18 overall and 2-7 in the SSAC.

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first in Game 1, with Mario Amaral leading it off with a double. One out later, courtesy runner Chase Morris scored when Loyola starter Kevin Lindsey tossed Dario Polanco's bunt attempt into the right-field corner, allowing Polanco to make it all the way to third. He then scored on Dennis Morton's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 Faulkner lead.

The lead grew in the third, assisted by an inning-continuing error on Loyola shortstop Spencer Rosenbohm. After the miscue, back-to-back-to-back doubles by Amaral, Nick Cain and Polanco plated four runs, and Dennis Morton's single knocked in a fifth as the Eagles sprinted to a 7-0 advantage.

Rosenbohm's RBI double drove in the Wolfpack's first run in the top of the fifth, and an infield groundout later in the inning resulted in another to trim Faulkner's lead to 7-2. Faulkner blew it open in it in its half, with Morton's grand slam highlighting a five-run uprising to push the margin to 12-2.

Torres improved to 5-1 on the year, tossing five innings and allowing two runs on two hits. Preston Szuch pitched a perfect sixth and Kurt Lipscomb closed out the seven-inning matchup with a perfect last.

Amaral was the only Eagles with multiple hits, collecting a pair of doubles.

Faulkner didn't waste any time jumping on top in the nightcap, with Cain's two-run double sparking a three-run first inning. Cain's two-run homer in the third pushed the lead to 5-0.

An infield groundout in the bottom of the fourth made it 6-0, and a looping single one out later by David Palenzuela drove in the Eagles' seventh run of the game. Cain's third hit of the game - a single - provided his fifth RBI and pushed the margin to 8-0.

In the sixth, Darrius Jennings drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 9-0 and, after another run scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 10, Amaral made it 11-0 with a sacrifice fly. Chase Morris doubled in the sixth, and Brandon Suttles doubled him in for Faulkner's 12th and final run.

Pelaez (4-0) tossed a complete-game two-hitter, striking out eight.

Faulkner travels to No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
