Martin Methodist clips Faulkner twice in series sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner was looking to extend its five-game winning streak to seven this afternoon when it hosted Martin Methodist in non-conference action here at Wynn Field, but the visitors had different plans. The Redhawks held on tight to a sixth-inning run in opener to earn the 1-0 win before battling back from a five-run deficit early in the Game 2 slugfest to gain the 8-7 victory in 10 innings.

After five scoreless innings in Game 1 Martin Methodist (25-8) loaded the bases with no outs on the board and made good with a single run on a sacrifice fly effort. Faulkner was unable to answer.

After logging just three hits in the first outing, the Lady Eagles went to work hard and early in the nightcap. The team booked as many hits in its first trip to the plate as in the entirety of the previous outing and went on to produce 12 before the game was over.

Back-to-back RBI doubles courtesy of Jessica Butterworth and Sophie Slemp moved Faulkner into a 2-0 lead in the first inning and the team added three more in the second on an Amanda Seales RBI double, Hannahlee Harris RBI single and a fielder's choice.

The Redhawks blasted back in the ensuing at-bat, however. Kaycee Hurd drilled a two-run shot over the centerfield fierce and Dharianna Familia followed soon after with an RBI double leaving Faulkner with a two-run lead.

Martin Methodist continued its explosive offensive work in the fourth when it found itself in a bases-loaded, no-out situation. Taylor Moore capitalized in full with a brutal grand slam to the left field bullpen to catapult the Redhawks into a 7-5 lead.

Slemp offered up another double that same inning and later scored on a Holli Brooks single, trimming the lead to just one.

Slemp then drove the ballgame into a tie with an RBI knock to right-center field immediately following a pitching change in the sixth inning.

Three scoreless innings followed ushering in the international tiebreaker rule in the 10 where each team starts the at-bat with a runner at second base. Martin Methodist made good on a mis-played grounder to inch into the lead and eventual win.

Hayden Strickland (2-4) allowed eight hits and gave up no earned runs in the the Game 1 loss.

Emma Cornell (5-0) started the second event and allowed seven hits and six earned runs in three innings of work. Caitlin Perry (5-4) suffered the loss. The freshman gave up just three hits and struck out four batters in seven innings from the circle.

Brittany Bishop (13-3) tallied both wins for Martin Methodist. The senior gave up just four hits over 11 2/3 innings of work and added five strikeouts. Ashton Edwards started the second game and scattered 11 hits and seven earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Slemp went 3-for-5 in Game 2 and added three RBIs and scored. Butterworth had three hits on the day and tallied an RBI and run.

Harris and Makenzie Anthony each had two hits in the second game. Harris scored twice and drove in a run and Anthony scored.

Faulkner dropped to 12-8 overall and will next host No. 7 Mobile in a non-league matchup on Tuesday. The doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Wynn Field.
