No. 2 AUM sweeps Faulkner in home season finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner was looking to close out the home season in style with wins over cross-town rival Auburn Montgomery in tonight's non-conference doubleheader at Wynn Field. The second-ranked Warhawks exploded in the first inning of the opener, however, to anchor the 6-2 victory before slipping by the Lady Eagles 1-0 in the nightcap.

The lion's share of AUM's (42-5) series scoring transpired in the team's first trip to the plate. The Warhawks generated five runs on as many hits while facing a pair of Faulkner pitchers.

The visitors stuck once more in the fourth inning on an infield error that would have otherwise retired the side.

Faulkner finally made good with a run on an infield error in the sixth inning and scored another on Emily Byrd's double to left-center in the seventh. The Lady Eagles had runners on base in every inning and stranded 13 in all over the first game alone.

Hayden Strickland (5-8) suffered the loss after facing six batters and logging just one out. The junior gave up five hits and earned runs before turning things over to Caitlin Perry.

Perry helped dig the defense out of an early rut by booking the remaining two outs and went on to allow just two hits over the remaining 6 2/3 innings of play. AUM's final run was unearned.

An RBI single courtesy of starting pitcher Taylor Powell in the second contest was all it took to gain the sweep for AUM. Powell as also stellar in the circle allowing just four hits while tallying 10 strikeouts.

Emma Cornell (7-6) suffered the tight loss after giving up just five hits and a single earned run while striking out three at the plate. The lefty was also 1-for-3 on the flip side.

Makenzie Anthony and Hannah Qualls were the only Faulkner players to produce a hit in both games and Anthony had an RBI in Game 1.

Sophie Slemp was 1-for-2 and scored and Byrd had a hit and drove in a run in the first game.

Faulkner dropped to 19-21 on the year. The Lady Eagles will close out the regular season in Southern States Athletic Conference action at Mobile on Saturday. The doubleheader against the Lady Rams is set to begin at 2 p.m.
