Faulkner sweeps Mobile in lengthy regular season finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOBILE, Ala. - Faulkner snapped a four-game losing streak and closed out the regular season with a sweep of Mobile in dramatic fashion here in today's Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader. Faulkner produced a seventh-inning run to secure the 2-1 decision in the opener before holding on to edge the Lady Rams 4-3 in 11 innings in the nightcap.

Jessica Butterworth put the Lady Eagles on the board when she scored on an infield throwing error in the first inning of Game 1.

The lead held until the fifth when Mobile's Victoria Lewis tied things up with an RBI double to left field.

The visitors answered in the do-or-die seventh, however, when Sophie Slemp drove in the game-winning run with a single to left.

Hayden Strickland held the circle for the first 4 1/3 innings for the birds. The junior allowed nine hits and the lone earned run and tallied three strikeouts.

Caitlin Perry (8-7) took over after the tying run was scored in the fifth and anchored the defense for the remainder of the event to gain the win. The freshman gave up just one hit and fanned four batters in the 2 2/3 span.

Holli Brooks's RBI double in the top of the third inning in Game 2 put Faulkner in control, but Kaylen Kosbab countered with an RBI single for the Lady Rams in the bottom of the sixth to tie the event and ultimately send it into extended innings.

The stalemate held until the 10th when both teams scored a pair of runs to keep things interesting. Hannah Qualls struck first for the Lady Eagles in the top of the inning with a two-RBI single to left-center.

Mobile fired back with a sacrifice bunt and scored once more on a fielder's choice, but the rallying stopped there.

Hannahlee Harris knocked in the final run of the outing with a single though the hole at short to gain the win in the ensuing at-bat.

Emma Cornell (8-6) was phenomenal for the Lady Eagles in the finale. The sophomore allowed just six hits and two earned runs in 11 innings of work to gain the win. The lefty also had a pair of strikeouts.

Butterworth had three hits and scored a pair of runs in the series while Brooks produced three hits an RBI and a run.

Slemp offered up two hits, scored and drove in run as well. Qualls had two RBIs.

Faulkner closed the regular season with an even 21-21 overall record and was 9-11 in the league. The Lady Eagles sit in sixth place in the SSAC standings with a single series between Middle Georgia State and Mobile yet to be played. Faulkner will be the sixth, seventh or eighth seed in the upcoming conference tournament, depending on the outcome of that matchup. The double-elimination event is set to begin on Thursday at Fain Park here in Montgomery.
