Clutch homers lift No. 2 Faulkner past No. 12 Saint Thomas 4-3

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Second-ranked Faulkner (3-0) scored four runs on a pair of homers to clip No. 12 Saint Thomas (3-1) 4-3 and secure the sweep in the inaugural NAIA Southeastern Challenge this afternoon at Harrison Field.

T.J. Condon muscled a three-run bomb to left center field in the first inning to give the Eagles a comfortable lead, but the Bobcats countered with a pair of RBI knocks in their first at-bat to trim the deficit to a solo run.

Saint Thomas tied the contest on an Oscar Rodriguez double in the fifth, but the stalemate wouldn't hold long.

Tra'mayne Holmes smashed a solo homer over the scoreboard in left field to slip the Eagles into the driver's seat for good in the sixth inning.

The Bobcats did work themselves into a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the eighth inning, but a three-pitch strikeout from closer Austin Moreland followed by an athletic infield out by Olivier Basabe slammed the door shot on the opportunity.

Moreland was stellar in his closing role striking out three of the five batters he faced.

Reid Long went 2-for-4 and scored for Faulkner and John Price was 1-for-1. They were the only other Eagles with hits for in the game.

Mike Peters got the start for Faulkner and scattered five hits over four innings while giving up two earned runs and tallying five strikeouts.

Israel Fuentes (1-0) earned the win while allowing a single earned run on just two hits and striking out a pair of batters in as many innings of work.

Tylier Campbell booked 1 1/3 innings on the mound and gave up two hits and logged a strikeout.

Jonathan Wilkins gave up one hit in the eighth while spanning the gap between Campbell and Moreland.

Faulkner will next host Culver-Stockton (Mo.) in a pair of doubleheaders next weekend. The first of four events is slated for 4 p.m. Feb. 10.
