No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett sweeps Faulkner

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Fifth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett (31-5-1) cliched a 1-0 Game 1 victory over Faulkner (12-19) on an RBI single in the sixth inning before securing the series sweep on six unanswered runs in the nightcap to gain the 6-2 decision here at Wynn Field.

Hayden Strickland Oates (2-5) scattered eight hits over seven innings and surrendered the lone run while striking out three batters in the opening loss.

After producing just three hits in first game, the Lady Eagle offense did a much better job making contact in the second event.

Emma Cornell secured an RBI on a fielder's choice play in the first inning before Hannahlee Harris extended the lead an additional run with a single in the second.

The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Grizzlies exploded with five runs on as many hits that included a Sydney Willhite two-run homer in the third inning. The Lady Eagles aided the assault with two costly errors.

Faulkner had multiple opportunities to strike back, but came up empty-handed on a one-out, bases-loaded situation that same inning before stranding two more runners in scoring position in the fourth. In all, the home team left 11 runners on base in Game 2.

The visitors tacked on the final run courtesy of a Brashante Dareus solo home run in the fifth inning.

Cornell (3-5) allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out five batters over four innings from the circle in the second loss.

Caitlin Perry was stellar through the final three innings booking a pair of strikeouts while giving up a lone hit.

Harris was 2-for-3 in each game and had an RBI and run in the second contest.

Abbigail Barron was 2-for-2 in Game 2.

Faulkner resumes conference play this weekend when it hosts Bethel (Tenn.) in doubleheader action at 2 p.m. on Friday.
