Faulkner dominates early, rallies late to sweep Bethel

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Six first-inning walks and a pair of hits anchored Faulkner's (14-19, 5-7 SSAC) 11-0, five-inning victory in Game 1 of this afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader against Bethel (16-14, 2-10 SSAC) before a four-run fifth inning helped catapult the team into a 7-4 decision and series sweep here at Wynn Field.

A Shelby Brown RBI single put the Lady Eagles on the board early in a long first inning before a passed ball and two bases-loaded walks ushered in three more runs for the home team and a pitching change for the Wildcats.

Taylor Nelson drove in an additional run on a single in the team's same at-bat while the final Faulkner score was secured on an infield error.

An error-prone Wildcat defense helped propel the Lady Eagles into a bigger lead in the following inning.

A wild throw gave Faulkner its first run of frame while a Maggie Tipton single and fielder's choice on the end of a Nelson swing moved the home team into a 9-0 advantage. The Lady Eagles bookended the scoring with another run on an error.

The final run of the game was also tallied on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning.

Faulkner managed 11 runs on 10 walks, seven hits and five Bethel errors in the opener.

While the Lady Eagle offense was busy scoring runs, Caitlin Perry (7-4) was busy preventing them from the circle. The sophomore struck out seven batters while walking one and allowed just three hits in the shutout.

The Wildcats finally broke their scoring silence with an RBI knock in the first inning of the second game and slipped into a 3-0 cushion after back-to-back infield errors offered the visitors a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the third. Bethel delivered an RBI single and sacrifice fly before the Lady Eagles retired the side.

Hannahlee Harris trimmed the deficit to two runs with an RBI single in the bottom of the same frame, but it wasn't until the electric fifth inning, after the visitors had tallied an additional run, that Faulkner finally put the Wildcats in its rearview mirror.

Nelson sparked the offensive slugfest with a standup triple and scored just moments later on a wild pitch.

Harris followed with a triple of her own and scored on a follow-up fielder's choice.

Brown tied the ball game with a solo home run to left field before Kendall Bennett did the exact same in the ensuing at-bat to give the Lady Eagles the go-ahead score.

Faulkner secured two insurance runs in the sixth inning when a pair of batters were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.

Tori Davis (2-5) gave up a pair of earned runs on six hits through as many innings in the Game 2 victory.

Hayden Strickland Oates tallied the final three outs of the contest.

Bennett went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and runs on the afternoon while Nelson was 3-for-5 with two of each.

Brown was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and a pair of runs while Harris hit .500, scored twice and knocked in a run.

Faulkner next hosts Blue Mountain (Miss.) in SSAC action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
