GULF SHORES, Ala. - A first-inning grand slam set the tempo in No. 9 Morningside's (Iowa) (11-1) 8-1 victory over Faulkner (5-8) here on Day 2 of the Gulf Shores Invitational this afternoon.

The first inning was a mixed bag for starting pitcher Emma Cornell (1-2). The junior left-hander loaded the bases after hitting three batters to set up the slam, but also peppered three strikeouts, all of her's in the outing, through the first at-bat. 

Cornell surrendered six earned runs but allowed just three hits over 2 1/3 innings in the loss.  

Faulkner had two singles in the first inning before Hannahlee Harris scored the lone run on an error soon after. 

The Lady Eagles had five hits in the game from five different batters.

The Mustangs added three more runs on two singles in the third inning before tallying their final one in the four-hit seventh.

Tori Davis finished the game from the circle and gave up one earned run on six hits while striking out two batters.

Faulkner will enter bracket play in the bronze division tomorrow morning beginning at 9 a.m. The opponent has yet to be determined.
