Faulkner takes down Mobile in SSAC action

Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. - Faulkner (42-10, 17-6 SSAC) fended off a pair of late-game comebacks in this afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader against Mobile to earn the sweep with 8-6 (7) and 11-8 wins, respectively.

The Eagles overcame a 2-1 first-inning deficit in the opener with an explosive six-run third that was capped by an Austin Paschke three-run blast on an 0-2 count.

The Rams produced a three-run bomb of their own courtesy of Chris Hopballe in their final at-bat, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Faulkner lead.

The visitors found themselves in a 5-1 deficit near the mid-way mark in Game 2 thanks to a five-run, four-hit fourth inning from Mobile.

Faulkner answered with a game-tying fifth weighted by a Paolo Montezuma solo home run followed two batters later by a two-run shot from Paschke.

The Rams and Eagles traded runs over the two ensuing at-bats before Faulkner put the game out of reach behind a five-run seventh frame that held strong despite a two-run homer from Logan Palmer in Mobile's final trip to the plate.

Israel Fuentes (9-0) gave up three earned runs on eight hits over five inning while striking out four batters in the opening win.

Tylier Campbell and Austin Moreland split duties in the sixth inning before Reid Long closed out the seventh allowing three earned runs on two hits while striking out three batters.

The second decision went to Moreland (2-0) in mid-game relief. The senior right-hander took over on the mound for the fifth through seventh innings and completely shut down the Mobile offense allowing just a single hit while tallying a pair of strikeouts.

Ivan Pelaez got the start in the nightcap and allowed six earned runs on nine hits he scattered over four innings. The senior lefty also booked four strikeouts.

Kolby Green and Jonathan Wilkins each secured an inning of work from the mound in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Wilkins allowed the final two earned runs on a lone hit.

Paschke was 4-for-6 on the day with five RBIs and three runs while John Price had four hits, knocked in two runs and scored three times.

Long went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the opener and Ryan Rosa drove in two runs on one hit in the second contest and scored three times.

The Eagles and Rams will close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon with a single nine-inning game set for 1 p.m.
