Faulkner run ends in SSAC tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

DECATUR, Ala. - It was a grueling three-game day for Faulkner (27-30) in elimination bracket play of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament here at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex. The Lady Eagles entered survival mode in the double-elimination event after dropping their opening game 3-1 to Coastal Georgia yesterday. Fifth-seeded Faulkner clipped 10th-seeded Brewton-Parker 2-1 this morning before taking down seventh-seeded Middle Georgia State 4-2 soon after. The Lady Eagle offense came up empty-handed against Coastal Georgia in the rematch this evening, however, allowing the Mariners to cruise to a 6-0 victory.

Faulkner committed two of its three errors against Brewton-Parker in the second inning allowing the Barons to claim a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles tied the contest on a wild pitch the following inning, however, before gaining the eventual win on a Maggie Tipton RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

Emma Cornell (6-7) was stellar in the circle allowing just three hits while fanning seven batters in the complete-game win.

Faulkner took a 1-0 first-inning lead against Middle Georgia State on a defensive error before methodically chipping away at the scoreboard over subsequent innings.

Julianne Wilkes knocked in another run on a single in the second frame before Taylor Nelson made it 3-0 in the fourth on another single.

A Sabrina Doucette two-run bomb in the fifth inning cut the Lady Eagle lead to a single run, but Wilkes came up with another RBI single in the sixth to book the victory for Faulkner.

Hayden Strickland Oates (5-8) secured the second victory of the day in her final appearance as a Lady Eagle. The senior right-hander gave up two earned runs while scattering nine hits over four innings. She also had a strikeout.

Caitlin Perry earned the save while fanning six batters and surrendering a lone hit over the final three innings against Middle Georgia State.

The Lady Eagles recorded 10 hits against the Knights in Game 2 of the day, but the offensive machine stalled out in the final showdown of the day as Coastal Georgia's Paige Alt and Chloe Boulineau combined for a no-hitter.

Meanwhile, the Mariner offense connected with four earned runs on nine hits while facing a pair of Faulkner arms.

Tori Davis (5-8) suffered the season-ending loss after allowing three earned runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Perry closed the afternoon from the circle and gave up an earned run on four more hits while striking out two batters.

Wilkes was 2-for-2 with two RBIs against Middle Georgia State while Alicia Richardson was 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.

Kendall Bennett was also 2-for-3 against the Knights.

Hannahlee Harris had two hits and runs over the first two contests.
