Faulkner edges Point in late night action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Top-ranked Faulkner (35-4) clipped Point (21-14) 9-4 and 4-3, respectively, in a pair seven-inning games at Harrison Field Thursday evening in one of the few remaining non-conference series of the year.

Southern State Athletic Conference player of the week Tra'mayne Holmes wasted little time in proving why he claimed this week's title. The junior infielder delivered with a triple in his first at-bat and later scored on an error.

Faulkner's second run in the first inning was courtesy of a Olivier Basabe sacrifice fly.

The Skyhawks jumped in front 3-2 in the third inning after scoring three runs on as many hits.

After squandering a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the bottom of the same inning, the Eagles exploded with with a five-run fifth.

Holmes sparked the scoring spree knocking in two runs on a single down the third base line before John Price followed with an RBI single of his own.

T.J. Condon then ripped his first two-run homer of the outing to hard left field, pushing Faulkner into a 5-3 advantage.

Point managed an additional run in the top of the following inning, but Condon blasted another two-run shot in the ensuing at-bat putting the upset out of reach.

Junior Ramirez allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out five batters in 3 1/3 innings of work in the start.

Kolby Green was credited with the win after surrendering just one earned run on two hits over 3 2/3 innings. He also had six strikeouts.

Game 2 was a much tight race.

The Eagles claimed a 2-0 lead after L.D. Coney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Ryan Rosa followed with a sacrifice fly.

Luke Parker then made it 4-0 with a two-RBI double in the fourth.

Point refused to go quietly, however, and a three-run fifth inning ushered new life into the Point dugout.

Strong relief work from Austin Moreland and Jonathan Wilkins kept the Skyhawks from narrowing the gap further, however.

Dustin Hagy (1-0) earned his first victory of the season allowing two earned runs on seven hits he scattered over four innings. He walked four batters in the span and struck out four others.

Moreland inherited two base runners with no outs in the sticky fifth inning and went on to allow a single earned run while giving up a hit and booking a strikeout.

Wilkins held the mound for the final two frames and surrendered a lone hit while striking out three batters.

Holmes hit .500 on the night and had two RBIs and runs.

Condon was 2-for-3 in Game 1 knocking in four runs and scoring two of them with his mirror home runs.

Parker was 2-for-2 with two RBIs in the night cap while Paolo Montezuma and Olivier Basabe each produced a hit and scored twice.

Faulkner will next host No. 17 Middle Georgia State in conference play this weekend. The three-game series opens Friday evening with a nine-inning contest slated for 6 p.m.
