Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Seventh-ranked William Carey iced Faulkner 4-0 here in Game 1 of this afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader, before inching by the visitors 4-3 in 10 innings in the nightcap to gain the sweep.
The Crusaders (35-6, 15-3 SSAC) scored a pair of runs on three hits in the first inning of the opener and closed things out with a run on a single and bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Hayden Strickland Oates (2-7) scattered six hits over five innings and allowed four earned runs in the loss.
Caitlin Perry tossed the final inning and tallied a strikeout.
The Lady Eagles (16-23, 7-11 SSAC) struck first in the second contest with three runs in the fifth inning.
Hannahlee Harris drove in the first on a single to shallow right field before Shelby Brown punctuated the inning with a two-RBI single in the same territory.
The home team responded with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the same inning, however, and tied things up with another single in the following at-bat.
The tie held through regulation and into the 10th inning where the Crusaders clinched the win on a sacrifice fly.
Emma Cornell (4-6) allowed just five hits over 9 2/3 innings while striking out nine batters in the narrow loss. All four runs were earned.
Harris and Brown each had three hits and RBIs in the series and Harris scored a run.
Faulkner will next travel to Marion to take on Judson College in a doubleheader set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
