Lewis-Clark fends off Faulkner in World Series showdown

Box Score

LEWISTON, Idaho - Host school and fifth-seeded Lewis-Clark State (38-13) overcame a three-run Faulkner (52-11) second inning with seven straight runs before holding off a late-game Eagle surge to clinch the 8-6 victory in this evening's winner's bracket battle of the Avista-NAIA World Series here at Harris Field.

Ryan Rosa put Faulkner on the board with his second homer of the Series, this one a two-run shot to left field, before a John Price single pushed the Eagles in front 3-0 in the team's second at-bat.

A solo homer from J.J. Robinson and additional run on a fielder's choice cut the advantage to a single score in the bottom of the same frame, however, and things continued to escalate for LCSC the following inning.

Head coach Patrick McCarthy turned to the bullpen after 2 1/3 innings and 59 pitches from starter Tyler Tungate.

Tanner Disibio and Tylier Campbell were both brought in to try and disrupt the hot-hitting Warriors, but it wasn't until the home team had catapulted into a four-run lead that the Eagles were finally able to retire the side in the third.

Campbell did a stellar job of containing the LCSC offense for two more innings before Raymond Pedrina crushed a no-doubter out of the park at left-center field capping the team's scoring for the night. The senior right-hander gave up the lone earned run on five hits he scattered over 4 2/3 innings of mid-game work.

A hit batter and ensuing walk gave Faulkner a pair of base runners with no outs in the seventh inning, but closer Anthony Balderas entered the game and quickly retired the first three batters he faced, dashing the Eagles' new-found momentum.

Faulkner finally climbed back into the scoring column in the eighth on a Price single and Olivier Basabe two-RBI double.

An infield error gave the Eagles new life and runners at the corners deep in the ninth inning, but Faulkner was unable to narrow the gap further.

"It's the same situation again guys," McCarthy told his team after the game. "It's double-elimination and we've been here before and we know what it takes to get to the championship game. You have to make teams earn every run, guys. We hit batters and walked others and you can't give runs away like that. You're a talented team, but sometimes the breaks just don't go your way. We aren't leaving yet. We've got a lot more baseball to play."

Tungate (10-1) suffered his first loss of the year after surrendering four runs, three of which were earned, on just two hits. He fanned three batters, walked two and hit another.

Disibio gave up three earned runs on four hits in 1/3 inning of work.

Closer Jonathan Wilkins did just that striking out the only two batters he faced in the eighth inning.

Price was an impressive 4-for-5 at the plate while Basabe was 3-for-4. Both players knocked in two runs and scored.

The Warriors remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament and will look to stay that way when they take on William Carey tomorrow evening.

Faulkner moves into the elimination action and will face top-seeded Oklahoma City tomorrow at 5 p.m. CST.
