Faulkner again hammers William Carey, advances to SSAC championship

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Second-seeded and fourth-ranked Faulkner (46-10) dealt No. 20 William Carey (37-17) a serious dose of deja vu this afternoon with a second blowout in as many games. The Eagles blasted the third-seeded Crusaders 16-1 (7) yesterday and followed with a 13-3 pummeling in this morning's Southern Stares Athletic Conference tournament semifinal at Paterson Field to claim the first spot in the title game.

A second-inning error on what should have been a routine out on a sacrifice bunt effort turned into a three-base RBI for Olivier Basabe after William Carey pitcher Lake Robertson lobbed the ball 10 feet over the bag.

Robertson couldn't shake the frustration and walked three of the next four batters he faced surrendering another run before the Crusaders made a pitching change.

Tra'mayne Holmes knocked in an additional run before the side was retired.

After two scoreless innings, John Price ripped an RBI double into left center field and T.J. Condon brought him in with a two-run homer just moments later.

Ryan Rosa capped the frame with a two-run double of his own.

William Carey did work itself into a one-out, bases-loaded situation in the sixth inning, but Tyler Tungate (9-0) bailed the defense out of the jam forcing a pair of popups on three tosses.

Faulkner's postseason muscle from the mound has been nothing short of stellar, but Tungate's effort this morning has been the pinnacle achievement so far.

The junior right-hander was exceptionally efficient over eight innings averaging less than three pitches per batter. Tungate gave up no earned runs and allowed just four hits while striking out six at the plate.

Paolo Montezuma anchored the Eagles' four-run seventh inning with a two-run homer before Wes Roberson wrapped up the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

The Crusaders did manage to avoid the shutout with three runs gained on three Faulkner errors and a two-run homer from James Land in the eighth inning.

Reid Long was 3-for-3 and scored while Condon finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run.

Basabe and Montezuma each had a hit, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Faulkner now awaits the outcome of the Middle Georgia State-Mobile rematch tonight at 8 p.m. The victor will advance to the winner-take-all championship game against the Eagles tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
