Balanced attack spurs Eagles to win at Webber

Box Score

Faulkner snapped its three-game skid and snagged its first Sun Division win of the season Friday night with a 31-14 victory over Webber International.

"I thought we played the most complete game we've played up to this point," Faulkner head coach Shayne Wasden said of the win. "We put four quarters of football together, something we hadn't done in a while."

Faulkner founded offensive success with sustained drives, putting together six possessions that lasted eight plays or more while running for 227 yards on the night.

"I thought our offensive line played outstanding. We were able to run the football and that's because those guys up front were opening holes for us and protected the quarterback when we did throw the ball," Wasden said. "(D'Arie Johnson (FR/Birmingham, Ala.) and Charles Blackmon (FR/Faunsdale, Ala.)) both ran the ball extremely well. Again, though, it goes back to the offensive line opening up some holes for them. They did a nice job of running the zone and hitting it where they needed to and they broke some tackles along the way."

The Warriors scored with 9:11 left in the third quarter to narrow the Faulkner lead to 17-14. Over the game's final 24 minutes and 11 seconds, Faulkner allowed the Warriors only 25 yards of total offense on 12 plays.

""We knew we were going to have to stop the run and we were able to do that," Wasden said of his defense's effort.

The Eagles put the game away with two touchdowns in a 10-second span midway through the fourth quarter. Terrance Sims (SR/Pensacola, Fla.) passed to Jacob Pigg (JR/Fayetteville, Tenn.) for a 7-yard touchdown pass on a trick play to push the lead to 24-14 with 6:15 left in the game. Alonzo Hansen (SR/Long Beach, Calif.) then scored on a 24-yard fumble return to put the game out of reach.

The Eagles opened the scoring with a quick 10-play, 60-yard drive that lasted 3:47 and ended with a 17-yard strike from Jayce Fisher (FR/Odenville, Ala.) to Blake May (FR/Loganville, Ga.).

After Webber tied it on a 41-yard touchdown run from Davont Williams, Alvin Renteria (SO/Phenix City, Ala.) put the Eagles up 10-7 with a 24-yard field goal. Johnson scored on a 4-yard run with 32 seconds left in the opening half for the 17-7 lead.

Johnson paced all rushers with 118 yards on 22 carries. Blackmon added 76 yards on 15 rushes. The Eagles also passed for 220 yards in the contest.

Faulkner (4-4, 1-3 MSC Sun Division) is off next week and returns to action Nov. 3 for its final home game of the season when Warner comes to call.
