LEBANON, Tenn. - Faulkner (4-6, 1-5 MSC) saw its season end in frustrating fashion on the road against Cumberland (7-4, 3-3 MSC) in a 72-14 loss at Nokes-Lasater Field.
The Eagle defense had no answers for the Phoenix and their option offense. QB Jake Parker ran for 103 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries while completing 10 of 16 passes for 111 yards and two more scores. Lamar Childress led Cumberland on the ground with 115 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. Five Phoenix had at least 60 yards on the ground. Discounting the drive that killed the clock to end the game, CU scored points on all but three of their drives. It punted just twice, and on each occasion, it got the ball back on interceptions and was back in the endzone three plays later. The Eagles turned the ball over five times with four interceptions and a fumbled kickoff return, leading directly to five Phoenix touchdowns.
Braxton Berrey had six punts for 225 total yards with a long of 56 on Faulkner's first drive. Robin Harris scored the Eagles' two touchdowns in the first half as he led the team with 79 yards on 17 carries. His 29-yard score ended a five-play, 47-yard drive to narrow the CU advantage to 13-7 after a penalty on a short kickoff by the Phoenix gave the Eagles favorable field position. After two more Cumberland touchdowns on short fields thanks to Faulkner interceptions, Faulkner did the same after a low punt snap by the hosts gave the Eagles the ball at the Phoenix 27. Harris scored from four yards out five plays later to make it a two-score game again. However, Cumberland was back in the endzone six rushing plays later and then scored again five plays from scrimmage after that thanks to a muffed kick by the Eagles. The two scores made the halftime score 41-14 and were the start of a closing 45-0 run.
The final three games of the season as injuries piled up marked a disappointing end to an otherwise promising season for the Eagles under first-year head coach Dayne Brown.
