The No. 2 Eagles baseball team (7-0) shut out Louisiana State University-Alexandria 5-0 in game one of their double-header on Monday night at Harrison Field, but had to take game two into the bottom of the ninth inning where Brady Hamilton brought Te'kwaan Whyte home from third base to win the game 11-10.
Tyler Thornton got the start on the mound for Faulkner in game one, where he threw 109 total pitches, totaled nine strikeouts and gave up only two hits over six innings pitched.
Reese Cooley went 1-for-2 in the game with a double that drove in three runs, and Andrew Carter drove in two runs in the same inning.
Brandon Suttles came on in the top of the seventh inning where he struck out four batters and was awarded the three-inning save.
There were 22 hits, 21 runs and nine different pitchers combined between the two teams in game two of the double-header.
Things started to get interesting going into the top of the fourth inning with Faulkner up 3-0.
LSU-A scored four runs in the fourth inning thanks to a hit-by-pitch and three separate defensive errors.
Faulkner came right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own.
Whyte led things off for the Eagles and took first base on a walk. He then advanced all the way to third base off of a wild pitch. Whyte scored on a defensive error, followed by T.J. Riles reaching home off another error.
LSU-A would outscore Faulkner 5-1 in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, taking a 9-6 lead into the eighth inning.
The Eagles held LSU-A scoreless in the top half of the eighth before scoring four runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a three-run shot by Rusber Estrada.
Jonathan Wilkins came in to try and record the save and get the Eagles home with their seventh win of the season. Two players got on base for LSU-A, and another defensive error by Faulkner led to the tying run.
That allowed the Eagles to get one more chance to grab the win in the bottom of the final inning, which they did when Faulkner loaded up the bases with only one out, and a ground-out to second brought home Whyte, giving the Eagles the win.
Faulkner will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Waleska, Georgia, to take on Reinhardt University. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m. central.
