MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lady Eagles softball team (4-0) defeated the University of the Cumberlands 4-2, 12-2, respectively, in its home opener on Friday afternoon at Wynn Field.
Faulkner went down 2-0 early in game one, but a three-run fifth inning, headlined by a single by Shelby Brown that brought in Taylor Nelson, followed by an error which scored Tara Ammons.
Nicole Morrison added the finishing touch in the bottom of the sixth inning when she drove in Shelbie Burbage, giving the Lady Eagles the 4-2 and the eventual victory.
Emma Cornell got the start and was awarded the win after pitching six innings and striking out five.
Caitlin Perry came in for the top of the seventh inning where she struck out two and earned the save.
The bats came alive for Faulkner in game two as the Lady Eagles got 18 hits and scored 11 runs in the process.
Faulkner scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning, with the Lady Eagles getting seven hits in the half inning alone.
The bottom of the sixth inning was big as well, and after Faulkner scored its fourth run of the inning, the game was ended on a run rule.
Shelby Brown went 3-for-3 in game two with a double and two runs.
Caity Jo Lee went 4-for-4, bringing in one run and scoring three.
Hannahlee Harris went 4-for-7 in the two games combined.
Tori Davis got the start and earned the win after five and two-thirds innings pitched and three strikeouts.
The Lady Eagles will face off against Union College on Saturday in double-header action at Wynn Field. The first game is set to begin at 11 a.m.
