No. 2 Faulkner hammers Talladega

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Second-ranked Faulkner (17-0) struggled little with in-state foe Talladega (9-6) in Tuesday evening's doubleheader at Harrison Field. The home team scored early and often en route to the series sweep by scores of 19-4 (7) and 13-3 (7), respectively.

The Eagles' seven-run first inning in the opener began with a bases-loaded wild pitch before an ensuing walk set the stage for Rusber Estrada's three-RBI double.

Austin Paschke muscled in run number five on a hard single and two subsequent walks juiced the bases for T.J. Riles' twin-RBI knock up the gut.

Faulkner surrendered a home run in the top of the third frame, but Paschke countered with a two-run blast of his own just moments later igniting an explosive five-run inning for the Eagles.

The Tornadoes tacked on three more runs in the next two at-bats, but the birds offered up a five-run fifth inning and registered two more in the seventh solidifying the abbreviated blowout.

Tyler Tungate (2-0) allowed four earned runs on nine hits while striking out 10 batters and working none over the first five innings of play.

Donte' Glover was perfect from the mound in the sixth and seventh innings and had five strikeouts.

The second event looked much like the first with Faulkner jumping out hard and heavy early.

The home team tallied nine runs in its first trip to the plate before an out bubble illuminated on the scoreboard. The eruption was anchored by a two-run shot from Reece Cooley and a grand slam courtesy of Ryan Rosa.

The Eagles went on to hang four more runs over the late innings.

Jake Kolterman (2-0) secured the Game 2 decision with a three-hit, five-strikeout shutout over the opening five innings.

Caleb DeRouen struck out two of the three batters he faced in the sixth, while closer Jonathan Wilkins surrendered an earned run on three hits in the seventh inning.

Talladega walked 14 batters, hit six and committed four errors in the series.

Paschke was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and scored twice in the opener while Reid Long went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a score.

Estrada was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in the first outing.

Riles was 2-for-5, knocked in three runs and scored a pair on the night.

Faulkner will next host Brewton-Parker in the Southern States Athletic Conference opening series this weekend. Play begins at 6 p.m. Friday evening with a single game followed by a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
