No. 15 Mobile sweeps No. 23 Faulkner in SSAC showdown

MOBILE, Ala. - Fifteenth-ranked Mobile (22-5, 6-0 SSAC) clipped No. 23 Faulkner (23-5, 7-2 SSAC) 2-0 here in Game 1 of this afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader before countering every Lady Eagle attack in the nightcap and muscling its way into a 10-6 victory.

The Rams tallied their first run of the day on a wild infield throw in the second inning before capping the scoring with an RBI single courtesy of Emily Fleetwood in the following at-bat.

Faulkner outhit the home team four to three and Shelbie Burbage accounted for half of the contacts in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

The event was more or less a pitcher's dual. Caitlin Perry (12-2) managed a superb game from the circle allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out four batters in the loss.

The visitors secured their first run of the day on a Shelby Brown sacrifice fly in the third inning of Game 2, but the lead was short-lived as Mobile countered with a six-run frame of its own.

Abbigail Barron brought new life into the Lady Eagle dugout in the fourth with a two-run homer to left field, but the Rams again answered with two more scores moving the advantage back to five runs.

Faulkner's offense erupted again in the sixth inning when Julianne Wilkes ripped a twin-RBI double to left-center field before scoring herself soon after on an infield error.

Mobile offered up a sac fly and RBI single in the bottom of the same window however, snuffing out the Lady Eagles' comeback hopes.

Emma Cornell (10-2) gave up a lone earned run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings in the second loss. The senior had three strikeouts.

Tori Davis tossed the remainder of the outing and surrendered four earned runs on eight hits.

Barron was 3-for-4, knocked in a pair of runs and scoring twice in the finale.

Faulkner next travels to No. 9 William Carry for an SSAC doubleheader set for 1 p.m. tomorrow.
