Box Score 3 MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Top-ranked Faulkner (31-2, 10-2 SSAC) iced Blue Mountain (20-11, 5-4 SSAC) 8-0 (7) in Game 1 of this afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader before an explosive 11-run fifth inning in the second contest carried the Eagles to a 16-3 win in seven innings, securing the series sweep here at Harrison Field.
Faulkner pummeled the Mississippi-based Toppers 15-2 (7) in last night's series opener and there was little that changed in today's bouts.
The Eagles favored the long ball for the bulk of it's Game 1 scoring. Reid Long kicked things off with a two-run shot in the second inning before Reese Cooley went yard in the leadoff spot in the third.
Austin Paschke then made it a 4-0 contest with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning.
A Rusber Estrada sacrifice fly was fallowed closely by a pair of runs on an infield throwing error giving the home team a six-run advantage in the sixth inning.
Cooley concluded his 3-for-4 effort with a two-run blast in the same frame.
Tyler Tungate (5-0) was lights-out for Faulkner with a three-hit shutout. The senior fanned seven batters and walked two in the complete game win.
The second outing was significantly more even keeled early on with the home team leading 5-3 after 4 1/2 innings of play. The Eagles' explosive fifth-inning surge propelled the event into a lopsided conclusion, however.
A host of Faulkner hitters impressed in the series finale, but none more so than Ryan Rosa who went 4-for-4 with four RBIs on two home runs.
Gage West, T.J. Riles and Te'kwaan Whyte were each 2-for-3. West had three RBIs and scored while Riles knocked in a run and scored. Whyte scored twice.
Cooley continued his hot streak going 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
Alex DuBord (6-1) allowed three earned runs on six hits he scattered over five innings in the win. He also had six strikeouts.
Brandon Suttles and Jonathan Wilkins tossed the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, and each allowed a single hit. Suttles booked a strikeout while Wilkins tallied three.
Faulkner will next host Georgia Gwinnett in a No.1 versus No. 2 matchup next weekend. The three-game series opens at 6 p.m. Friday evening at Harrison Field.
