Faulkner sweeps No. 14 Middle Georgia State, McCarthy claims 600th win

COCHRAN, Ga. - Top-ranked Faulkner (44-5, 18-3 SSAC) rebounded from a ninth-inning loss last night with a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep against No. 14 Middle Georgia State (36-15, 14-7 SSAC) by scores of 2-0 and 9-8, respectively, here this afternoon.

 

The opening shutout gave Eagles head coach Patrick McCarthy his 600th career victory.

 

The win came off the batt of Luis Duran who offered up a two-run single in the third inning.

 

Duran went 2-for-3 in the game as did Reid Long, who also scored a run.

 

Tyler Tungate (6-0) anchored the defense from the mound tallying six strikeouts while allowing just three hits in the complete-game victory.

 

Reese Cooley sparked Faulkner's scoring in the second event with a two-run homer in his first trip to the plate.

 

A four-run second at-bat ultimately gave the visitors a permanent lead.

 

Alex Carrillo got the Game 2 start and allowed three earned runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.

 

The victory was credited to Andrew Carter (2-0) who surrendered a run on as many hits over the subsequent 1 2/3 frames.

 

Ryan Rosa was 5-for-9 on the day and had two RBIs and scored in the nightcap.

 

Faulkner will next travel to West Point, Georgia, to take on Point University on Tuesday. The doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. central.
