DECATUR, Ala. - Eighteenth-ranked and third-seeded William Carey (36-13) utilized a two-run fifth inning to take down 13th-ranked and second-seeded Faulkner (43-12) 2-0 here on Day 2 of the Southern States Athletic Conference softball tournament hosted at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex this afternoon.
An RBI single and ensuing run-scoring double were all the Crusaders needed to move past the Lady Eagles in this afternoon's showdown.
Faulkner moved a pair of runners into scoring position deep in the final inning of play thanks to a Hannahlee Harris double, but William Carey thwarted further progress with a game-ending strikeout.
Emma Cornell (17-6) gave up the two earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight batters in the loss.
Taylor Nelson went 2-for-2 in the game.
The Lady Eagles will now take on Bethel in an elimination-game rematch at 2:45 p.m. Faulkner iced the Wildcats 3-0 in the tournament yesterday.
