Sanders' no-hitter lifts Mobile over Faulkner in SSAC elimination event

DECATUR, Ala. - Ninth-ranked and top-seeded Mobile's (41-12) Karley Sanders delivered a brilliant no-hit effort from the circle while the Ram offense tallied five runs on eight hits to secure the 5-0 victory over second-seeded Faulkner (44-12) here in elimination-game action of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex this evening.

The top two teams were battling to stay alive in double-elimination tournament that grants the winner an automatic bid to the NAIA Women's Softball World Series beginning on May 14. The Lady Eagles fell to No. 3 William Carey 2-0 earlier this afternoon and Mobile was dealt at 4-2 loss by No. 4 Blue Mountain.

While Sanders was busy keeping Faulkner off the bases, the Rams broke the scoring silence in the third inning with a run on an RBI double before generating a second on a sacrifice fly just moments later.

Lexi Mathis continued the scoring with a leadoff homer in the sixth while runs four and five came on an RBI single and outfield error, respectively, before the inning came to a close.

Emma Cornell (17-7) gave up four earned runs on eight hits she scattered over 5 1/3 innings of work while striking out three batters in the loss.

Tori Davis booked the final two outs for the Lady Eagles.

Faulkner will now await the announcement of the World Series Opening Round qualifiers on Tuesday. An at-large berth would mark the program's first-ever trip to the national tournament.
